Last month, Kevin Dickson, Chair of the Southdale Residents Group, had a productive meeting with Morguard, the real estate company responsible for several buildings within the Southdale area mall. The purpose was twofold: to discuss plans for the vacant buildings and to establish an ongoing dialogue that keeps our community informed.
Morguard’s responsibilities:
Morguard oversees the properties located east of Lakewood Avenue, extending up to the pass-through road between McDonald’s and Burger King. Their commitment to revitalizing these spaces is evident.
Ladco Company’s role:
The Southdale Residents Group also seeks to connect with Ladco Company, which owns properties on the west side of Lakewood Avenue, extending eastward to Beaverhill.
Promising News:
- Former Pizza Hut: Good news! The vacant Pizza Hut building has found a new tenant. A restaurant is scheduled to open later this year, and substantial renovations are underway.
- Former MLCC: Another positive development—the old MLCC building will soon have a new tenant.
- Former Perkins Restaurant: Talks are ongoing for the former Perkins Restaurant, although no specific details are available yet.
- Old, ugly signage: Ladco said they are replacing the old sign near the KFC.
Dispelling Rumours:
Contrary to longstanding rumours, there is no agreement preventing alcohol-related businesses from occupying these buildings. Any such claims are false.
Community Engagement:
The Southdale Residents Group is committed to enhancing our community. If you have questions or ideas, don’t hesitate to reach out. You can share your thoughts in the comments or email us at hello@southdale.online.
Awesome thanks for the information updates. Great for us read it written to hear such positive news. One small little detail is that kitty pool sidewalk has been underwater every rainfall. How can we get this fast tracked?
Also on the topic of sidewalks there are several of the main sidewalks along Beaver hill, etc. especially that needs some of the bumps and slopes improved for a wheelchair users such as myself. Can we put a request in for this? I’ve got no problem going out and marking on a map that trouble some areas I do this for TransCanadaTrail‘s, etc., as a side job
Thanks for your comment, George. We will bring this up with our councillor. If you have a map of those trouble locations where assessability is particularly challenging, please send them our way! You can email them to hello@southdale.online.
